Message from the President

Dr. Matsui Nobuyuki
President, Nagoya
Institute of Technology

Nagoya Institute of Technology (NIT) was founded in 1905
as Nagoya Higher Technical School, a pioneering academic
institute dedicated to industrial education.
Since then, it has been renamed twice, first as Nagoya
College of Technology in 1944, and then in 1949 its name
changed to Nagoya Institute of Technology.
The second name change came about through merging with Aichi
Prefectural College of Technology, which was founded in 1943.
In 2004, Nagoya Institute of Technology was reincorporated under
a new educational and National University Corporation system.
Since 1905, more than 50,000 engineering students have
graduated from our Institute.
They have demonstrated outstanding achievements in
professional fields as well as academic areas.
I was greatly honored to be appointed as the President of
Nagoya Institute of Technology in 2004.
As an alumnus of NIT, I feel a deep sense of responsibility
to make NIT an internationally renowned and technologically
innovative academic institution of higher learning and
research in engineering.
The aim of our Institute is to seek a glorious future by
training talented engineers and researchers focused on
manufacturing.
Traditionally, our Institute has expanded in pace with
the economic growth of Japan.
Now, we are confronting new situations.
In order to seek a glorious future through engineering, we
have been trying to combine technologies with different fields
which have been considered unrelated to conventional engineering.
Some representative examples of new research areas are
environmental safeguards, medical science, pharmacy, agriculture,
the five senses of human beings, design and entertainment.
New research projects and educational systems designed to
reach goals in these areas have already begun.
Nagoya Institute of Technology is located in the central part
of Japan, Aichi prefecture.
This area is traditionally famous for industrial manufacturing.
Making the most of this geographical opportunity, we are developing
new and innovative educational and research activities through
collaboration with the world-renowned manufacturers around us.
We have prepared unique, new schemes for collaboration such as
our Project Institutes and Techno-Innovation Center.
Nagoya Institute of Technology has been recognized as a top-class
engineering institute and will continue its research and
educational activities to seek a glorious future by training
talented engineers and continuing research focused on manufacturing.
