Department of Mechanical Engineering
|
The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers a wide range of curriculum in mechanical engineering
including thermal science and combustion, fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, manufacturing and material
processing, mechatronics, biomechanics, computational science and applied physics. The department
provides following three undergraduate programs to foster engineers and researchers with a firm base of
scientific and technological knowledge for mechanical engineering: (1) Applied Physics Program, (2)
Mechanical System Program, and (3) Energy System Program. At the end of the first academic year, students
choose one of three programs. The department has educational flexibility for students who wish to target
specific disciplines. Students can take credits in other disciplines that complement their individual interests
under some limitations. More than fifty percent of all undergraduate students proceed to the graduate school.

| Applied Physics Program |
With the extensive and practical knowledge of physics and mathematics, both experimental approach and
computer simulation approach are nowadays crucial for mechanical engineers. The Applied Physics
Program provides the systematic curriculum composed of (1) electric and electronic measurements, (2)
optical measurement, (3) quantum measurement, (4) applied mathematics, (5) control technology, (6)
computational applied physics, and (7) data processing.

Millimeter wave generator using multiple solid state devices (Gunn diodes).
This generator can produce power of more than 1.4 W at 60GHz-band
using a 3x3 array of Gunn diodes.

| Mechanical System Program |
In the Mechanical System Program, we aim to train engineers and researchers who can
develop, design, and produce advanced machines or systems. Students can learn about
mechanics of material, machine dynamics, control theory, and production engineering etc. We
study extensive research in traditional or advanced fields in mechanical engineering, which
cover materials, mechanics, manufacturing, robot, nanotechnology, environment, sensibility,
rehabilitation, and biomechanics.

| Energy System Program |
In the Energy System Program, through the consistent education and active researches on the thermal and
fluid technologies, the steady and successive fosterage of mechanical engineers capable not only for contriving
advanced energy storage, conversion and utilization systems with low environmental impact, but also for
contributing to realize globally sustainable thermal and fluid environments is a long-range objective.
